Cancer Prevention Week gets underway with media bang

The first day of Cancer Prevention Week saw widespread coverage

This year’s Cancer Prevention Week received a loud media fanfare as it got underway today, with our message on cancer prevention being covered in a wide section of the national press, TV and radio.

We put out a press release advising that about 20,000 cases of breast cancer could be avoided every year if women were to follow our advice to be more physically active, reduce alcohol consumption and keep to a healthy weight.

Daybreak on ITV1 and Sunrise on Sky News both covered the story in their morning bulletins, and it also featured on commercial radio stations nationwide including Heart, Magic, Wave 105, Hallam FM,  Key 103, BRMB, Forth 2, Viking FM, Beacon, CFM, Aire FM, West Sound and Absolute.

Our Head of Communications Richard Evans appeared on BBC Radio Five Live and will be appearing on the show every morning of the week to discuss a different aspect of cancer prevention. On Monday morning he talked about the relationship between cancer and alcohol.

Among the newspapers to cover the story on breast cancer preventability were the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Express, the Daily Mail and the Scotsman.

This is just part of what WCRF is doing over Cancer Prevention Week to raise awareness of the link between cancer and an unhealthy lifestyle. We will also be running events to raise funds for our research and education programmes such as our Beat the Banana! race on Thursday in London’s Hyde Park and nationwide Fruity Friday events.
