WCRF quoted in the Daily Mail today

Wine: a cause of breast cancer?

Those of you who read the Daily Mail may have seen an article today ‘One daily glass of wine can double risk of breast cancer‘ .

The study from the United States found that one or more drinks a day doubled the risk of lobular breast cancer. This type of breast cancer accounts for about 10 to 15 per cent of breast cancer cases.

The article also included a quote from me. At WCRF we feel it is important to put articles about a single study in context with other research in the area, which is what we did.

I explained that alcohol also increases the risk of other cancers such as bowel cancer.

This is why WCRF recommends that if people drink alcohol, they limit their consumption to two drinks a day for a man and one for a woman.

About 19 000 cases of breast cancer in the UK could be prevented by maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active and not drinking alcohol.
